The barrier islands are found all up and down the coast of Georgia. They could be considered beautiful and wonderful. These barrier islands are named,Tybee Island, St. Catherine’s Island, Ossabaw Island, Sapelo Island, Sea Island, St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island, Blackbeard Island, and Cumberland Island .
  • St. Catherine’s Island is known as  Santa Catalina.
  • The island is owned by St. Catherine's Island Foundation and it is not open to the public.
  • The island has been inhabited for over 4,000 years and was the first Spanish outpost in Georgia.
  • Of all the Great Barrier Islands, St. Catherine’s Island has seen the worst erosion due to no major rivers flowing from the inland out to sea.
  • Some of the animals that have lived on the island are the Grevy's zebra, ring-tailed lemur, dama gazelle, St. Vincent parrot, rhinoceros hornbill, Aldabra tortoise, Florida sand hill crane, and Jackson's hartebeest.
