-
St. Catherine’s Island is known as
Santa Catalina.
-
The island is owned by St. Catherine's Island Foundation and it is
not open to the public.
-
The island has been inhabited for over 4,000 years and was the
first Spanish outpost in Georgia.
-
Of all the Great Barrier Islands, St. Catherine’s Island has seen
the worst erosion due to no major rivers flowing from the inland out to sea.
-
Some of the animals that have lived on the
island are the Grevy's zebra, ring-tailed lemur, dama gazelle, St. Vincent parrot, rhinoceros hornbill, Aldabra
tortoise, Florida
sand hill crane, and Jackson's hartebeest.
